October was planned to be a busy month. It was busy, but not as I had planned.
I know that it won’t do my folk singing street cred much good but every year, for the past ten years, I’ve been away somewhere for a week playing golf, very averagely, with five friends. For the past three years we’ve been to Alvor in Portugal which has had the added bonus of having a couple of great Irish bars, particularly the Black Stove, with excellent live music. It has become a tradition amongst our group that I perform each evening at one of the bars regardless of how well the wine has flowed following the day’s golf and our evening meal! For some reason, “Watching” from the Witness CD seems to be a favourite with the audiences out there.
Keith Wilsonat the Black Stove, was once again the perfect host. He’s played all over the place including stints in Les Miserable in the West End. He’s a really first class performer – he does a great version of Paul Brady’s “The Island”. If you’re in Alvor he’s well worth going to see – check out his website – http://keithwilsonmusic.com
Following Alvor, I was scheduled to do several recording sessions but unfortunately my mum was taken seriously ill whilst I was out in Portugal, having to have major surgery and therefore my priorities changed. I’m pleased to say that she’s doing really well and is in great spirits.
The NHS gets some stick but Chesterfield Royal Hospital – and in particular the Elmton Ward – were fantastic. Everyone worked so hard to make my mums stay as comfortable as possible. Cheers Elmton Ward. Derbyshire Social Services have also been superb in looking after my mum on release from hospital. It annoys me about the constant bad press that Social Services receives – unjustly in my opinion. So, from me, many thanks to the Bolsover Intermediate Team consisting of Team Leader, Caroline, Dawn, Louise, Shobha, Alison, Pam, Gail, Pamela, Ele and Abbey – all true stars!
It’s been a fruitful songwriting period – at least two from the past month should make it on to the new CD which obviously will now be delayed until the Spring.
Keep in touch via the website or Facebook. It’s good to catch up with friends old and new.
